Dongwang, the 100% solar town

Donggwang, a little Korean town, has achieved what even the most powerful countries in the world are still struggling to accomplish: total energy independence with clean technology. The village’s forty houses and the school all have large solar panels covering their roofs. In 2004, the government helped to install solar systems in Donggwang, paying 70% of the installation fees. A great initiative that we ought to replicate everywhere.

Virgin America Rocks

Virgin America LogoI hate to fly! To me, flying in economy class is like riding in a bus that has wings. I rarely had very good experiences with airlines.

This week I flew Virgin America (different from Virgin Atlantic) for the first time and I have to say I was impressed. The quality of the service on ground and in flight was outstanding. The staff is super friendly and, they all look good! Yes, they do! It’s like the myth of the hot air attendant is real again…

How the US administration shapes information

Faux NewsThe New York Times published this morning a great article on how the US administration shapes information by putting its military analysts on major news channels.

Here are some of the highlights but I strongly recommend reading the full article:

FaceBook is so annoying

I never liked FaceBook. I created an account a few months ago just to see how it FaceBook Sucksworks. After adding a few friends (actual friends), I quickly became annoyed and overwhelmed by the amount of useless information.

I had heard that FaceBook was a cleaner MySpace. This is wrong! FaceBook is everything but clean. All these crappy little apps are bothering the hell out of me. The page is cluttered and make it very hard to read or understand what you’re doing.

Invisible wounds of war

Depressed soldierAbout 300,000 U.S. troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or depression, but about half receive no care, an independent study said on Thursday.

The study by the RAND Corp. also estimated that another 320,000 troops have sustained a possible traumatic brain injury during deployment. But researchers could not say how many of those cases were serious or required treatment.

Why the US should NOT boycott the Olympics

Boycott China OlympicsAlthough the idea of protecting human rights and bringing democracy in China looks good on paper, I believe this is not doable for any country who wishes to stay in good terms with China.

Let’s face it, China is the largest market in the world and a country simply can’t afford to reject it’s largest potential clients.

I came across this great article on Business Week. The author Diane Brady has a very good point there:

Google is evil

Google is evilFollowing something I posted yesterday saying that Google scares me, here is an interesting article. Basically, this article confirms what I’ve been thinking and saying for a while. For those of you who don’t want to read the full article, here are a few snipets:

Some have interpreted the ceaseless criticisms of Google’s privacy policies and its co-operation with totalitarian regimes as a sign the Don’t Be Evil goal is unattainable for a profit-driven company.

I agree with that! If you’re in business, you have to be somewhat evil. If Google didn’t want to be evil, it would be a non-profit organization…

I want Microsoft to buy Yahoo!

MicroHoo

When Microsoft made it public that it wanted to buy Yahoo! a couple months ago, I was like “yeahhh, someone is finally going to make things harder for Google”. While I didn’t expect Jerry Yang, CEO and co-founder of Yahoo! to be really excited about that, I certainly didn’t expect him to be such an ass by simply ignoring Microsoft’s offer.

Yahoo! new it was in danger and tried to work out a deal with NewsCorp (the devil wearing Prada…). It didn’t work out.
